Unregistered Master Builder - Dichroic

MNM019

Dichroic is an audio work commissioned by Sydney based design studio Atelier Sisu. The piece accompanies the large scale inflatable installation, Ephemeral.

“Ephemeral” or “Efímero” in Spanish, is an adjective, meaning the quality of being fleeting or vanishing quickly; impermanence.

Ephemeral is an immersive, light and sound temporary pavilion-esque environment. The use of dichroic film creates the illusion of the bubble-like form.

Dichroic takes inspiration from the ebbing and flowing of tides, translating the height of physical wave amplitudes to the modulation. Opening and closing filters melodically and playfully.

The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek “dikhroos” meaning two-coloured, refers to an optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. These properties give the dichroic film its unique aesthetic effects, mimicking those of the bubble.

The material breaks the sunlight up into a rainbow of different colours. Complex shadows of reflected colour are thrown onto the environment around the work, emulating the reflectivity and uniqueness of bubbles.
