Pat Jaffe and Aidan Filshie - Summit

MNM021

MADE NOW MUSIC presents ‘Summit’, a collaboration between Naarm/Melbourne pianist/composer Pat Jaffe and Warrang/Sydney-based violist Aidan Filshie. The two childhood friends, who’ve been playing together since primary school, reunited to head into Move Studios in Eaglemont, just a few hundred metres away from where they grew up.

In 2021, Filshie commissioned Jaffe to write a new work for his final undergraduate recital at the Sydney Conservatorium. Summit draws upon shared experiences for the two, who go on annual training camps to Victoria’s High Country together (Filshie is a keen cyclist and Jaffe a trail runner). The work depicts a peaceful, early morning approach towards a mountain followed by a gradual climb, before bursting above the tree line, capturing the beautiful moment of stillness as you reach the summit.

The EP includes two companion pieces which also represent landscape-based narratives. Threshold depicts a walk through the Italian city of Siena, crossing a series of gateways – first outside the city’s walls, through the maze of laneways, then into a private courtyard – before retracing these steps. Descent transports the listener through a series of Jaffe’s crystalline memories, including the inner Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy where he now lives, a bushfire ravaged landscape and the forest near his grandparents’ former home.

This album was recorded on the land of the Wurundjeri People and we wish to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
