Strange Attractors - Strange Attractors
MNM034
Jess Green – guitar, effects
Dylan van der Schyff – drum kit, percussion
This recording documents a series of spontaneous improvisations made over a single session in Melbourne, Australia. The music is exuberant and complex – at times cinematic, at times cheeky and raucous. These are real-time conversations in sound and emotion, evoking free jazz, free improvisation, ambient and drone music, and, occasionally, shades of 90’s grunge rock.
The name Strange Attractors is borrowed from the mathematics of complex systems. It describes the dynamic forces that pull systems in chaos towards coordination, but never in the same way twice. This term is used in the study of grand complex systems such as planetary orbits, flocking birds, swarming insects, and weather systems. Strange Attractors describes unpredictable pattern formation in nature and therefore provides a delightful metaphor for the free-wheeling constellations of energy in these pieces.
